It's been mentionned... twice now, that the part fairy members of this family were not treated as truly part of it. Jean-Marie really internalised it and thinks they have a duty to earn the reluctant tolerance they're given at all times.

I was hoping that he might somehow redeem himself, but now that he's actually raised his hand against his own flesh and blood... I don't know.
