That late summer to winter time skip glossed over several plot elements.
Ellen has grown pretty depressed, but I don't think every step of the process is relevant. Other character stories have been skipped: Ellen's daughters, as well as Liroj and Bot's fairy girlfriends, all had to adapt to their new surroundings, but I prefered to set the context and then skip to the result. Why? Because all those situations (Ellen's included) involve the same feelings, in the short term. Fear, anger, despair, rebellion, grief, isolation, etc. Too much focus would be repetitive and pretty emo. I prefered to show how their respective personalities and situations lead to different states, and mention why, in case it's not clear from the context alone.
