Well, Pekka's concern is similar to an adoptive parent worrying that their mulatto child might turn out too dark. And he knows it, that's why he's so embarrassed to ask...
I sort of took it that Pekka was more concerned with her health, and if she would fit in with her peers as she grows up.
Either way, he is a caring sort and I can sympathize.
Oh he is caring, there's no doubting that, but he can have his weaker moments. Just now, it's the "cute little girl turning into a grotesque monster" part that disturbed him.
