I always find it cheap when a work of fiction invents a barbaric culture that shares most of the modern, civilised reader's values.
One could, also, create a reasonably alien society, but make the protagonists easier to identify with by having them challenge the more shocking aspects of their traditions.
I want to avoid both. Orcs will have some amount of barbaric customs, and the main characters among them are conservative.
